New Nonprofit Will Provide Free Music Education to Baltimore City Students Launched today, the Tony Colter Foundation will begin raising funds to provide an annual scholarship to one deserving Baltimore City middle school student for a free music education. The organization was established by its namesake’s daughter to honor her father’s legacy and keep his passion for blues music alive. Recipients of the award will receive an instrument, iPad and free lessons at the School of Rock Baltimore. “My dad was a kind and generous person who believed in paying it forward,” said Karley Colter Graham. “That’s what this charity is all about. We want to give young people the opportunity to pursue their musical passions who may not otherwise have the chance.” Tony “Maddog” Colter was born in Baltimore City. He spent over 40 years as a radio personality, including eight years with 98 Rock and seven with DC 101. The last 15 years of his career he was on SiriusXM’s Bluesville and Watercolors. He tragically passed in May 2019 from complications of a stroke. “In addition to supporting a young person from my dad’s hometown, this scholarship aims to keep blues music alive,” said Colter Graham. “Our first big fundraising event will be the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival at Sandy Point State Park on May 21-22. My dad used to host that each year, so it just made sense.” Once fundraising goals are met, the foundation plans to partner with a Baltimore City middle school and open up the scholarship opportunity. The application process is anticipated to launch this fall. To learn more or donate, please visit www.TonyColterFoundation.org.
